This was the second of my wooden fish shapes. I wanted to make the ultimate “keeper” redfish so I cut it out at exactly 27 inches, which is the max keeper size in Florida. I used pine board for this one, and used a router to recess the fins to give it a more 3D appearance. My intention was to make this flat pine board have the illusion of being a very unique, three dimensional fish. My idea for the artwork was to paint a scene where redfish are actually caught.
I used a scroll saw to cut out the shape, and then applied 3 coats of gesso primer. The illusion of being a real fish is all about the layering process with acrylic paint. It takes a lot of patience, but the result is so worth it!
This photo was taken at Sebastian Inlet, one of my favorite places to fish. We have been on fishing charters there, and have also caught redfish off the shores.
